The National Statistical Office (NSO) of Nepal published a comprehensive report on population projections down to the ward level. This important initiative, commissioned by the NSO and supported by UNFPA-Nepal, has been underway since early 2024.
PSR Hub provided technical support for the development of the report, along with its projection model. Our team—comprising Sambriddhi Malla, Jibesh Acharya, and later joined by Divya Shakya, worked closely in the report over the past year to analyze the demographic drivers shaping Nepal’s future. This included detailed examination of fertility, mortality, and migration trends with its future scenarios up to year 2051. The results projects population dynamics across five levels of administrative hierarchy, disaggregated by age and sex.
The work reflects a shared commitment to enhancing the availability of timely, transparent, and evidence-based population data. We acknowledge that this is a significant step, and further efforts will be needed to continue strengthening demographic data systems in Nepal.
